A Woman Delivered from the Chains of the Devil

October is the Month of the Rosary

A Woman in Antwerp Delivered from the Chains of the Devil

In 1578, a woman in Antwerp had given herself to the devil, even signing the contract with her own blood.  Soon thereafter she was stricken with acute remorse and had a profound desire to make amends for this evil deed.  She sought out a wise and kind confessor, who advised her to go to Father Henry, director of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, at the Dominican Friary, to ask him to as her to inscribe her in it and to hear her Confession.

Accordingly, she went to ask for Father Henry but instead met the devil disguised as a religious.  The devil scolded her pitilessly and said she could never hope to receive God’s grace again as long as she lived and there was no way she could take back what she had signed.

Although she was devastated, the woman did not lose hope of God’s mercy and sought out Father Henry once more.  She found the devil a second time and met with the same rebuff.

The woman came back a third time and then, by Divine Providence, she found Father Henry, the priest she had been seeking.  He treated her with great kindness and urged her to throw herself upon God’s mercy and make a good Confession.  He then inscribed her in the Confraternity and told her to say the Rosary frequently.

One day, while Father Henry was saying mass for her, the Blessed Virgin forced the devil to give her back the contract she had signed.  In this way, she was delivered from the devil through the authority of Mary and through her devotion to the Rosary.

–Thirty-sixth rose, The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort

I hope you have enjoyed these excerpts from The Secret of the Rosary.  I highly suggest a devotion to the Rosary.  Pray it daily.  If you do pray the Rosary daily, join the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary if you have not already done so.  If you haven’t read The Secret of the Rosary, I suggest that, too.  It’s worth reading, as are all of Saint Louis de Montfort’s books.
