Comment on the New Translation

I read an article recently in the Washington Post about the new translation of the mass.  The author was complaining about the elevated language.  One example given was that Jesus “suffered death” now instead of “died.”  When I first read the new translation, that struck me, too.  But it just came to me while reading the columnist’s complaining.  Here is what I wrote in my comment:

At first, I, like you, wondered about “suffered death” in place of “died.”  But think about it. Jesus suffered.  He was tortured and had a crown of thorns pressed onto His head.  After that, He had to carry the heavy cross.  Then He was nailed to the cross.  He then hung there for three hours before He breathed His last.  Imagine the pressure at the nail points!  Jesus didn’t just die.  He suffered death.
